Harry B. Uppercue, 63, a retired psychiatric nurse, died of cancer Monday at his home in Odessa, Fla. He had moved to Florida two months ago from his Joppa home.

He retired in 1991 from the Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital where he had been a nurse since 1966 and for several years was Director of Nursing. He had previously worked at Franklin Square Hospital.

Born in the Park Heights area of the city, he received his education at city schools and was a 1947 graduate of Baltimore City College. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, PA., in 1951.

After a tour of duty in the Navy from 1951 to 1955 as a cryptographer, he returned to school and was a graduate of the Francis Payne Bolton School of Nursing in Cleveland. He also earned a Master’s Degree in psychiatric nursing from the University of Maryland.

He was a member of the Joppatowne Lions Club and an avid stamp collector. Mr. Uppercue was also active in the affairs of the Good Sheppard Presbyterian Church, at Joppa Farm Road and Towne Center Drive in Joppatowne, where a memorial service is planned for 12:30pm Sunday.

Survivors include his wife Jean Dittrich, whom he married in 1952. Three sons, H. Brenton Uppercue of Tampa, Fla., Byron E. Uppercue of Odessa, Fla., Brian A. Uppercue of Abingdon, and a daughter, Carol U. Nastalski of Joppa; and six grandchildren.
